Maja Malmberg, Billy Ngasala, Pedro E Ferreira, Erik Larsson, Irina Jovel, Angelica Hjalmarsson, Max Petzold, Zul Premji, José P Gil, Anders Björkman, Andreas Mårtensson Malaria Journal 2013, 12:103 (18 March 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | ePUB | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The authors explore the temporal trends of molecular markers of anti-malarial drug resistance (Pfmdr and Pfcrt) in a Tanzanian setting from 2004 to 2011 and suggest that the significant changes observed are associated with both the lack of chloroquine pressure and the wide-scale use of ACT. The results confirm other studies in the region.

Sex-specific induction of CYP6 cytochrome P450 genes in cadmium and lead tolerant Anopheles gambiae

Fauzia K Musasia, Alfred O Isaac, Daniel K Masiga, Irene A Omedo, Ramadhan Mwakubambanya, Richard Ochieng, Paul O Mireji Malaria Journal 2013, 12:97 (15 March 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Analysis of gene transcription levels on three cytochrome P450s in three strains of Anopheles gambiae. The first strain was maintained without any selection pressure, while the second was selected for lead tolerance and the third strain for cadmium tolerance. These findings suggest that tolerance to cadmium or lead can influence the metabolism of pyrethroids in the mosquito in a sex-specific manner, with potential implications in mosquito vector control operations.

Prevalence of antifolate resistance mutations in Plasmodium falciparum isolates in Afghanistan

Ghulam R Awab, Sasithon Pukrittayakamee, Natsuda Jamornthanyawat, Fazel Yamin, Arjen M Dondorp, Nicholas PJ Day, Nicholas J White, Charles J Woodrow, Mallika Imwong Malaria Journal 2013, 12:96 (15 March 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | ePUB | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

This study indicates that shortly after the adoption of AS+SP as first-line treatment in Afghanistan, most parasites had a double mutation haplotype in dhfr, and a small number of isolates from eastern Afghanistan harboured a triple mutation haplotype in dhps. These results are clearly concerning since they suggest a higher degree of SP resistance than previously detected.

Dose–response tests and semi-field evaluation of lethal and sub-lethal effects of slow release pyriproxyfen granules (Sumilarv®0.5G) for the control of the malaria vectors Anopheles gambiae sensu lato

Oscar Mbare, Steven W Lindsay, Ulrike Fillinger Malaria Journal 2013, 12:94 (14 March 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Research has shown that larviciding can be an effective tool for integrated malaria vector control, but the uptake of this intervention has been hampered by the need to re-apply larvicides frequently. There is a need to explore persistent, environmentally friendly larvicides for malaria vector control and the efficacy of a 0.5% pyriproxyfen granule was assessed here for the control of major malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa.
