Cloning and characterization of bifunctional enzyme farnesyl diphosphate/geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase from Plasmodium falciparum

Fabiana M Jordão, Heloisa B Gabriel, João MP Alves, Claudia B Angeli, Thaís D Bifano, Ardala Breda, Mauro F de Azevedo, Luiz A Basso, Gerhard Wunderlich, Emilia A Kimura, Alejandro M Katzin Malaria Journal 2013, 12:184 (4 June 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | ePUB | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The paper presents the cloning, expression, purification, biochemical characterization of the FPPS from Plasmodium falciparum. The authors show that this enzyme has two activities that result in the production of farnesyl diphosphate/geranylgeranyl diphosphate, a key branch point of the isoprenoid synthesis and, hence, playing a central role in the regulation of a number of essential functions in Plasmodium parasites.
