Volume 7 Suppl 1, 2008 Towards a research agenda for global malaria elimination is produced with support from: FNIH – Gold Sponsor The Foundation for NIH is transforming the way biomedical research is initiated, supported and conducted, and it is blazing the trail for a new era of discovery through innovative and novel public-private collaborations. The foundation provides expertise, experience and an integrated infrastructure for creating new biomedical research and training initiatives across multiple disciplines in support of the mission and causes of the National Institutes of Health. It brings together industry, academia and the philanthropic community to collaborate, leverage resources and create unique opportunities to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and biomedical research that may translate into successful healthcare solutions. The foundation’s current global health portfolio includes the Grand Challenges in Global Health program. Five years into its work, the initiative is seeing promising progress in understanding the genetic basis for severe malaria in children, the development of new insect-control measures, the development of new approaches to vaccine development and the treatment of chronic infectious diseases. Additionally, the Comprehensive T Cell Vaccine Immune Monitoring Consortium is working to develop standardized assays of cell-mediated immunity in support of the effort to find an AIDS vaccine. The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health was the result of a congressional mandate and is a nonprofit, 501(c) (3), corporation that actively seeks funding partners for a broad portfolio of ground-breaking programs and projects in support of biomedical research.
