An improved method for simultaneous detection of both P. falciparum and P. vivax. The authors then applied the method and outlined a strategy for sampling a population where malaria is now rare to assess the extent of the silent pool of malaria infected people. Both the method and the strategy are key elements of surveillance in the regions where malaria is at the “pre-elimination” stage.
