Human malarial disease: a consequence of inflammatory cytokine release
Ian A Clark, Alison C Budd, Lisa M Alleva, William B Cowden Malaria Journal 2006, 5:85 (10 October 2006)
Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central
|
Editor’s summary
Malariologists tend to think that the pathophysiology of malaria is unique. This thought-provoking review shows that much can be learned from events described with other pathogens and that falciparum malaria is primarily an inflammatory cytokine-driven disease. In particular, the inability of mitochondria, through the effects of inflammatory cytokines, to utilise available oxygen may play a crucial role.

Care-seeking patterns for fatal malaria in Tanzania
Don de Savigny, Charles Mayombana, Eleuther Mwageni, Honorati Masanja, Abdulatif Minhaj, Yahya Mkilindi, Conrad Mbuya, Harun Kasale, Graham Reid Malaria Journal 2004, 3:27 (28 July 2004)
Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central
|
Editor’s summary
This careful analysis of malaria deaths in an area of perennial malarial transmission addresses important issues, showing for instance that the care-seeking behaviour was substantially different in the case of severe malaria and uncomplicated malarial episodes. The limitations of using verbal autopsies are well discussed.

The relationship of physico-chemical properties and structure to the differential antiplasmodial activity of the cinchona alkaloids
David C Warhurst, John C Craig, Ipemida S Adagu, David J Meyer, Sylvia Y Lee Malaria Journal 2003, 2:26 (1 September 2003)
Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central
|
Editor’s summary
The cinchona alkaloids are the longest standing antimalarial drugs in clinical use, but their mode of action is still incompletely understood. This is the first study to provide comprehensive physico-chemical information regarding these alkaloids. The results strikingly demonstrate that the antimalarially inactive threo compounds are all considerably more hydrophilic than the active erythro compounds and that they are also very weak inhibitors of beta-haematin formation in contrast to the strongly active erythro compounds that inhibit beta-haematin formation better.

Editor’s summary
This theoretical and mathematical review provides a new look at the Ross-Macdonald models, the basis of malaria epidemiology. The models describe the processes that drive malaria transmission, mainly from an entomological perspective, and they are, therefore, particularly useful to evaluate intervention programmes that reduce transmission.

Thick blood film examination for Plasmodium falciparum malaria has reduced sensitivity and underestimates parasite density

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central

Editor’s summary
The paper provides a qualitative analysis of the programmatic issues faced when implementing IPT during pregnancy, from both provider and user perspectives. Of particular interest is the Tanzanian experience of the specific link made between SP-IPT and Steven Johnson¿s Syndrome by pregnant women, which is unique and has been one of the most important barriers to the effective uptake of ITP, as a result of media spin. The paper highlights the need for much greater attention to awareness creation among pregnant women, which is all too often an afterthought to the delivery of IPT.

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central

Editor’s summary
Parasite DNA can be found in urine and saliva
samples and, depending on the method of purification and the size of the amplicon, it is possible to identify between 75% and 90% of the microscopically positive blood individuals. This is a novel approach for large scale malaria screening or epidemiological surveys.
