Community knowledge and perceptions about indoor residual spraying for malaria prevention in Soroti district, Uganda: a cross-sectional study

Michael Ediau, Juliet N Babirye, Nazarius M Tumwesigye, Joseph KB Matovu, Simba Machingaidze, Olico Okui, Rhoda K Wanyenze, Peter Waiswa Malaria Journal 2013, 12:170 (27 May 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | ePUB | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Knowledge about IRS is inadequate and negative perceptions about its use are prominent especially among the rural and less educated individuals. To ensure householders¿ cooperation and participation in the IRS programme, adequate community mobilization and sensitization is needed prior to use of IRS for effective malaria control.

Characterizing PvARP, a novel Plasmodium vivax antigen

Darwin A Moreno-Pérez, Ambar Saldarriaga, Manuel A Patarroyo Malaria Journal 2013, 12:165 (20 May 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | ePUB | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Characterization of the P. vivax asparagine-rich protein (PvARP) by a straightforward approach using molecular biology and immunochemistry assays. The reactivity with sera from individuals infected with P. vivax indicates that it contains epitopes that are target of antibody response generated during natural exposure.

G6PD deficiency in Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria-infected Cambodian patients

Nimol Khim, Christophe Benedet, Saorin Kim, Sim Kheng, Sovannaroth Siv, Rithea Leang, Soley Lek, Sinuon Muth, Nguon Chea, Char Chuor, Socheat Duong, Alexandra Kerleguer, Pety Tor, Pheaktra Chim, Lydie Canier, Benoit Witkowski, Walter RJ Taylor, Didier Ménard Malaria Journal 2013, 12:171 (28 May 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Reports the results of survey of G6PD deficiency, anaemia and haemoglobinopathies in malaria patients in Cambodia. The issue of G6PD deficiency is highly relevant in countries such as Cambodia, faced with the need to use primaquine to effectively deal with vivax malaria and to reduce transmission of falciparum, but where anxiety among doctors and nurses of primaquine-induced severe haemolysis in patients with G6PD deficiency is widespread.

Submicroscopic Plasmodium falciparum malaria and low birth weight in an area of unstable malaria transmission in Central Sudan

Amal H Mohammed, Magdi M Salih, Elhassan M Elhassan, Ahmed A Mohmmed, Salah E Elzaki, Badria B El-Sayed, Ishag Adam Malaria Journal 2013, 12:172 (28 May 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

An interesting and difficult-to-obtain data set from a case-control study of the relationship between Plasmodium falciparum infection during pregnancy and low birth weight in the delivered babies. This is important in view of the current controversy regarding the importance of submicroscopic infections on birth weight. This is a relevant issue as countries consider changing antenatal care policies from intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy to intermittent screening and treatment of malaria in pregnancy.

Polymorphism of the parasite lactate dehydrogenase gene from Plasmodium vivax Korean isolates

Hyun-Il Shin, Jung-Yeon Kim, Won-Ja Lee, Youngjoo Sohn, Sang-Wook Lee, Yoon-Joong Kang, Hyeong-Woo Lee Malaria Journal 2013, 12:166 (21 May 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | ePUB | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Parasite lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH) is widely used in rapid diagnostic tests: the genetic variation of Korean isolates was analysed. The fact that the pLDH genes of 19 isolates of P. vivax were identical, except for one for SNP at nucleotide 456 indicates that this gene is relatively stable.

A novel live-dead staining methodology to study malaria parasite viability

Erica M Pasini, Denise van den Ierssel, Henri J Vial, Clemens HM Kocken Malaria Journal 2013, 12:190 (7 June 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | ePUB | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Artemisinin-based combination therapy does not measurably reduce human infectiousness to vectors in a setting of intense malaria transmission

Bernadette J Huho, Gerard F Killeen, Heather M Ferguson, Adriana Tami, Christian Lengeler, J Derek Charlwood, Aniset Kihonda, Japhet Kihonda, S Patrick Kachur, Thomas A Smith, Salim MK Abdulla Malaria Journal 2012, 11:118 (18 April 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

A study of the impact of artesunate/SP use on oocyst/sporozoite carriage in mosquitoes. It is not unexpected that in an area of intense malaria transmission, with presumed large numbers of asymptomatic gametocyte carriers, that ACT does not result in a marked reduction in transmission indices. Whilst the result in not unexpected the methodology is thorough and is likely to be useful to others.
