Francisca A Abanyie, Paul M Arguin, Julie Gutman Malaria Journal 2011, 10:340 (10 November 2011) A nationwide survey of laboratories in the United States and its nine dependent territories was conducted in 2010 to determine factors that may contribute to shortcomings in the diagnosis of malaria. Although malaria diagnostic testing services were available to a majority of U.S. laboratories surveyed, very few were in complete compliance with all of the CLSI guidelines for analysis and reporting of results, and most respondents reported very few cases of malaria annually.

External quality assessment of malaria microscopy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo Pierre Mukadi, Philippe Gillet, Albert Lukuka, Ben Atua, Simelo Kahodi, Jean Lokombe, Jean-Jacques Muyembe, Jan Jacobs Malaria Journal 2011, 10:308 (18 October 2011) This study reports the findings of an external quality assessment (EQA) showing an alternative to cross-checking of blood slides in the quality control of malaria microscopy. The present EQA revealed a poor quality of malaria microscopy the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Prozone in malaria rapid diagnostics tests: how many cases are missed? Philippe Gillet, Annelies Scheirlinck, Jocelijn Stokx, Anja De Weggheleire, Hélder S Chaúque, Oreana DJV Canhanga, Benvindo T Tadeu, Carla DD Mosse, Armindo Tiago, Samuel Mabunda, Cathrien Bruggeman, Emmanuel Bottieau, Jan Jacobs Malaria Journal 2011, 10:166 (15 June 2011) A study testing whether the prozone effect has a significant effect on the performance of malaria RDTs in "in the real world". The authors report that four of the six RDTs used in the study with fresh samples showed only a "weak" prozone effect in a minority of the samples, predominantly those with high parasitemia. Two kits produced worrisome prozone effects.
