Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) assemblages associated with Nidularium and Vriesea bromeliads in Serra do Mar, Atlantic Forest, Brazil

Tatiani C Marques, Brian P Bourke, Gabriel Z Laporta, Maria Sallum Parasites & Vectors 2012, 5:41 (16 February 2012)

Marques et al. assessed mosquito assemblage in bromeliad phytotelmata, showing that it was influenced by landscape characteristics and bromeliad fullness. Results raise questions about the role of An. homunculus in transmission of Plasmodium in Atlantic Forest hotspots. Image: A view from southeastern Atlantic Forest.

Adherence to Plasmodium vivax malaria treatment in the Brazilian Amazon Region

Elza A Pereira, Edna AY Ishikawa, Cor JF Fontes Malaria Journal 2011, 10:355 (13 December 2011)

In this study, the authors conclude that compliance was overall better than expected in the area but that even a small group of non-adherent patients can have an impact on the magnitude of transmission.

Pharmaceutical services for endemic situations in the Brazilian Amazon: organization of services and prescribing practices for Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum non-complicated malaria in high-risk municipalities

Martha C Suárez-Mutis, Paula P de Souza, Letícia F Freitas, Elaine S Miranda, Mônica R Campos, Claudia GS Osorio-de-Castro Malaria Journal 2011, 10:335 (3 November 2011)

Study on malaria pharmaceutical practices in six Brazilian municipalities with high malaria incidence. The topic of pharmaceutical assistance for malaria in Latin America is of major public health importance and has not received the deserved attention in the literature and the results of this study may have important consequences for malaria-oriented health services in the Amazon region and may contribute to the adoption of more effective organizational strategies.

Gestational malaria associated to Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum placental mixed-infection followed by foetal loss: a case report from an unstable transmission area in Brazil

Bruna O Carvalho, Joycenéa S Matsuda, Sergio LB Luz, Flor E Martinez-Espinosa, Juliana A Leite, Fernanda Franzin, Patrícia P Orlandi, Gustavo B Gregoracci, Marcus VG Lacerda, Paulo A Nogueira, Fabio TM Costa Malaria Journal 2011, 10:178 (27 June 2011)

This case confirms the tropism towards the placenta by both of these species of parasites, reinforces the notion that co-existence of distinct malaria parasites interferes on diseases’ outcomes, and opens discussions regarding diagnostic methods, malaria treatment during pregnancy and prenatal care for women living in unstable transmission areas, such as the Brazilian Amazon.

Cost risk benefit analysis to support chemoprophylaxis policy for travellers to malaria endemic countries

Eduardo Massad, Ben C Behrens, Francisco AB Coutinho, Ronald H Behrens Malaria Journal 2011, 10:130 (17 May 2011)

This article is part of a collection on Travellers' malaria

The idea addressed in this paper is interesting: the authors seek to know when malaria chemoprophylaxis is not an economically-valid option, as a function of the region being visited (and thus the risk of malaria), the time spent there and the possible adverse effects of chemoprophylaxis.
