Development of a TaqMan Allelic Discrimination Assay for detection of Single Nucleotides Polymorphisms associated with anti-malarial drug resistance

Edwin Kamau, Saba Alemayehu, Karla C Feghali, LaDonna S Tolbert, Bernard Ogutu, Christian F Ockenhouse Malaria Journal 2012, 11:23 (20 January 2012)

Paper reporting the development of a TaqMan Real Time PCR assay for the detection of SNPs associated with anti-malarial resistance. This assay has promise as a convenient and efficient way to examine patient samples in resource-constrained settings.

Clinical trial of extended-dose chloroquine for treatment of resistant falciparum malaria among Afghan refugees in Pakistan

Natasha Howard, Naeem Durrani, Sanda Sanda, Khalid Beshir, Rachel Hallett, Mark Rowland Malaria Journal 2011, 10:171 (23 June 2011)

A clinical trial addressing a question of apparent importance to policy and practice in Pakistan. The work demonstrates conclusively that extended CQ provides almost no clinical benefit and should serve to dispell the wishful thinking of the people responsible for this policy. The work also provides a good benchmark of highly prevalent CQ resistance, data which is becoming harder to obtain because the therapy is considered, in almost all other settings, an unethical intervention.

Plasmodium falciparum resistance to anti-malarial drugs in Papua New Guinea: evaluation of a community-based approach for the molecular monitoring of resistance

Jutta Marfurt, Thomas A Smith, Ian M Hastings, Ivo Müller, Albert Sie, Olive Oa, Moses Baisor, John C Reeder, Hans-Peter Beck, Blaise Genton Malaria Journal 2010, 9:8 (7 January 2010)

Interesting paper aiming at investigating the role and applicability of the molecular drug resistance profiles in community samples in Papua New Guinea.
