External quality assessment on the use of malaria rapid diagnostic tests in a non-endemic setting

Philippe Gillet, Pierre Mukadi, Kris Vernelen, Marjan Van Esbroeck, Jean-Jacques Muyembe, Cathrien Bruggeman, Jan Jacobs Malaria Journal 2010, 9:359 (13 December 2010)

A study reporting on the results of an external quality assessment session on RDTs in a non-endemic setting. A total of 128/133 (96.2%) of clinical laboratories using RDTs participated. Six three-band and one four-band RDT brands were used. Errors in RDT performance were mainly related to RDT test line interpretations, partly due to incorrect package insert instructions.

Malaria rapid diagnostic tests: Plasmodium falciparum infections with high parasite densities may generate false positive Plasmodium vivax pLDH lines

Jessica Maltha, Philippe Gillet, Lieselotte Cnops, Jef van den Ende, Marjan van Esbroeck, Jan Jacobs Malaria Journal 2010, 9:198 (10 July 2010)

In this study, six out of nine P. vivax-specific RDTs showed false positive Pv-pLDH lines when challenged to a panel of 85 P. falciparum samples with high (≥2%) parasite densities.
