A cluster-randomized trial of mass drug administration with a gametocytocidal drug combination to interrupt malaria transmission in a low endemic area in Tanzania

Seif A Shekalaghe, Chris Drakeley, Sven van den Bosch, Roel ter Braak, Wouter van den Bijllaardt, Charles Mwanziva, Salimu Semvua, Alutu Masokoto, Frank Mosha, Karina Teelen, Rob Hermsen, Lucy Okell, Roly Gosling, Robert Sauerwein, Teun Bousema Malaria Journal 2011, 10:247 (24 August 2011)

This study illustrates the possibility to achieve high coverage with a three-day MDA intervention, but also the difficulty in defining suitable outcome measures to evaluate interventions in areas of very low malaria transmission intensity.

Prospective strategies to delay the evolution of anti-malarial drug resistance: weighing the uncertainty

David L Smith, Eili Y Klein, F Ellis McKenzie, Ramanan Laxminarayan Malaria Journal 2010, 9:217 (23 July 2010)

At a global scale, because of uncertainty about the time to the emergence of ACT resistance, there was a strong case for multiple first-line therapies to guard against early failure.

Pre-elimination of malaria on the island of Príncipe

Pei-Wen Lee, Chia-Tai Liu, Herodes Rampao, Virgilio E do Rosario, Men-Fang Shaio Malaria Journal 2010, 9:26 (20 January 2010)

This article is part of a collection on Towards malaria...

The paper is an encouraging report of what is possible with an integrated malaria elimination programme. The effective measures combining four major control methods have produced a rapid decline in malaria morbidity and mortality on the island of Príncipe.
