Costs analysis of the treatment of imported malaria

Viera Svihrova, Maria Szilagyiova, Elena Novakova, Jan Svihra, Henrieta Hudeckova Malaria Journal 2012, 11:1 (2 January 2012)

An interesting case study for future discussions of reimbursing malaria chemoprophylaxis for travellers to high risk areas. Only little data exist in the literature on the effect of chemoprophylaxis on treatment costs of imported malaria cases.

Cost risk benefit analysis to support chemoprophylaxis policy for travellers to malaria endemic countries

Eduardo Massad, Ben C Behrens, Francisco AB Coutinho, Ronald H Behrens Malaria Journal 2011, 10:130 (17 May 2011)

This article is part of a collection on Travellers' malaria

The idea addressed in this paper is interesting: the authors seek to know when malaria chemoprophylaxis is not an economically-valid option, as a function of the region being visited (and thus the risk of malaria), the time spent there and the possible adverse effects of chemoprophylaxis.

The incidence of malaria in travellers to South-East Asia: is local malaria transmission a useful risk indicator?

Ron H Behrens, Bernadette Carroll, Urban Hellgren, Leo G Visser, Heli Siikamäki, Lasse S Vestergaard, Guido Calleri, Thomas Jänisch, Bjørn Myrvang, Joaquim Gascon, Christoph Hatz Malaria Journal 2010, 9:266 (4 October 2010)

The intensity of malaria transmission does not correlate with the risk of travellers acquiring malaria. Policy needs to be adjusted regularly to reflect the changing risk and it is proposed to use a threshold incidence to minimize use of chemoprophylaxis for low risk exposure during visits to S-E Asia.
