Bacterium-like particles as multi-epitope delivery platform for Plasmodium berghei circumsporozoite protein induce complete protection against malaria in mice

Krystelle Nganou-Makamdop, Maarten L van Roosmalen, Sandrine AL Audouy, Geert-Jan van Gemert, Kees Leenhouts, Cornelus C Hermsen, Robert W Sauerwein Malaria Journal 2012, 11:50 (20 February 2012)

The authors describe the use of a multifunctional carrier system, bacteria like particles based on Lactococcus lactis that includes the incorporation of Plasmodium berghei CSP B cell and T cell fragments for the induction of protective immunity.

Plasmodium vivax: comparison of immunogenicity among proteins expressed in the cell-free systems of Escherichia coli and wheat germ by suspension array assays

Edmilson Rui, Carmen Fernandez-Becerra, Satoru Takeo, Sergi Sanz, Marcus VG Lacerda, Takafumi Tsuboi, Hernando A del Portillo Malaria Journal 2011, 10:192 (14 July 2011)

Malaria proteins are notoriously difficult to produce and a head-to-head comparison of the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell-free expression system is beneficial to the large numbers of researchers trying to express such proteins.

Optimizing expression of the pregnancy malaria vaccine candidate, VAR2CSA in Pichia pastoris

Marion Avril, Marianne J Hathaway, Megan M Cartwright, Severin O Gose, David L Narum, Joseph D Smith Malaria Journal 2009, 8:143 (29 June 2009)

VAR2CSA is an unusually conserved member PfEMP1 family, which is transcriptionally upregulated in placental isolates. The molecule is the main candidate for a vaccine against pregnancy-associated malaria. This study describes the efforts to optimize the expression and domain boundaries, and looks at immunogenicity of the recombinant proteins.
