Impact of three years of large scale Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) interventions on insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae s.l. in Benin

Gil Germain Padonou, Michel Sezonlin, Razaki Osse, Nazaire Aizoun, Frederic Oke-Agbo, Olivier Oussou, Ghelus Gbedjissi, Martin Akogbeto Parasites & Vectors 2012, 5:72 (10 April 2012)

This study demonstrates the impact of three years of large scale indoor residual spraying using bendiocarb and deltamethrin treated nets interventions. Findings reveal that Anopheles gambiae have maintained and developed the resistance to pyrethroids, but are still susceptible to bendiocarb. The selection of resistant individuals was caused by other insecticides than those used by malaria vector control tools. Image: IRS workers.

Update on resistance status of Anopheles gambiae s.s. to conventional insecticides at a previous WHOPES field site, "Yaokoffikro", 6 years after the political crisis in Côte d'Ivoire

Alphonsine A Koffi, Ludovic Alou, Maurice A Adja, Moussa Koné, Fabrice Chandre, Raphael N'Guessan Parasites & Vectors 2012, 5:68 (2 April 2012)

The results presented here show that insecticide resistance in the S form of An. gambiae s.s. is multifactorial at this locality and includes, in addition to target site mutations, enhanced metabolic mechanism components never identified before. At least four resistance mechanisms were found: high frequency of the L1014F kdr, ace-1R and increased activity of NSE and GSTs. Dynamics of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors in Benin: first evidence of the presence of L1014S kdr mutation in Anopheles gambiae from West Africa

Innocent Djègbè, Olayidé Boussari, Aboubakar Sidick, Thibaud Martin, Hilary Ranson, Fabrice Chandre, Martin Akogbéto, Vincent Corbel Malaria Journal 2011, 10:261 (12 September 2011)

Pyrethroid and DDT resistance is widespread in malaria vector in Benin and both metabolic and target site resistance are implicated. Resistance was not correlated with a change of malaria species and/or molecular forms. The L1014S kdr allele was first identified in wild population of An. gambiae s.s and An. arabiensis hence confirming the expansion of pyrethroid resistance alleles in Africa.

Comparative analyses reveal discrepancies among results of commonly used methods for Anopheles gambiae molecular form identification

Federica Santolamazza, Beniamino Caputo, Maria Calzetta, José L Vicente, Emiliano Mancini, Vincenzo Petrarca, João Pinto, Alessandra della Torre Malaria Journal 2011, 10:215 (2 August 2011)

The results reveal that the PCR and PCR-RFLP approaches most commonly utilized to identify A. gambiae M and S forms are not fully interchangeable, as usually assumed. There are operational suggestions on the choice of the most convenient method for large-scale M- and S-form identification.

Biochemical basis of permethrin resistance in Anopheles arabiensis from Lower Moshi, north-eastern Tanzania

Johnson Matowo, Manisha A Kulkarni, Franklin W Mosha, Richard M Oxborough, Jovin A Kitau, Filemoni Tenu, Mark Rowland Malaria Journal 2010, 9:193 (7 July 2010)

The papershows a low frequency of permethrin resistance in Anopheles arabiensis from Lower Moshi, north-eastern Tanzania. The experimental design is based on diagnostic resistance tests, including bottle bioassays using three concentrations of permethrin and synergy tests (PBO, DEF) and biochemical assays for evaluating the oxidase and esterase enzyme activities.

Control of pyrethroid and DDT-resistant Anopheles gambiae by application of indoor residual spraying or mosquito nets treated with a long-lasting organophosphate insecticide, chlorpyrifos-methyl

Raphael N'Guessan, Pelagie Boko, Abibathou Odjo, Joseph Chabi, Martin Akogbeto, Mark Rowland Malaria Journal 2010, 9:44 (8 February 2010)

The study indicates that chlorpyrifos methyl outperformed DDT and lambdacyhalothrin. In IRS campaigns, it should provode improved levels of transmission control compared to conventional formulations of DDT or pyrethroids, always assuming that the product is available for such use.

Evaluation of PermaNet 3.0 a deltamethrin-PBO combination net against Anopheles gambiae and pyrethroid resistant Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes: an experimental hut trial in Tanzania

Patrick Tungu, Stephen Magesa, Caroline Maxwell, Robert Malima, Dennis Masue, Wema Sudi, Joseph Myamba, Olivier Pigeon, Mark Rowland Malaria Journal 2010, 9:21 (19 January 2010)

Interesting study that highlights the importance of developing effective control tools that can be utilized in resistance management programmes. Although the results of the paper do not provide overwhelming support for the deltamethrin and piperonyl butoxide combination bednet, it is an important negative result.
