Implementation of a novel PCR based method for detecting malaria parasites from naturally infected mosquitoes in Papua New Guinea

Arif U Hasan, Setsuo Suguri, Jetsumon Sattabongkot, Chigusa Fujimoto, Masao Amakawa, Masakazu Harada, Hiroshi Ohmae Malaria Journal 2009, 8:182 (1 August 2009)

This paper describes the development of a new PCR-RFLP assay to detect and discriminate Plasmodium falciparum from P. vivax based on species-specific variation in the cytochrome b gene.

A pre-intervention study of malaria vector abundance in Rio Muni, Equatorial Guinea: Their role in malaria transmission and the incidence of insecticide resistance alleles

Frances C Ridl, Chris Bass, Miguel Torrez, Dayanandan Govender, Varsha Ramdeen, Lee Yellot, Amado Edu, Christopher Schwabe, Peter Mohloai, Rajendra Maharaj, Immo Kleinschmidt Malaria Journal 2008, 7:194 (29 September 2008)

The paper addresses three aspects of malaria vectors in Equatorial Guinea: their abundance including species composition, their role in malaria transmission and finally incidence of insecticide resistance alleles. The demonstration of a high frequency of kdr alleles in mosquito populations before the onset of a malaria control programme shows the importance of continuous entomological surveillance.
