Impact of insecticide-treated bed nets on malaria transmission indices on the south coast of Kenya Francis M Mutuku, Charles H King, Peter Mungai, Charles Mbogo, Joseph Mwangangi, Eric M Muchiri, Edward D Walker, Uriel Kitron Malaria Journal 2011, 10:356 (13 December 2011) Entomological indices indicate a much reduced human biting rate and a diminishing role of An. gambiae s.s. in malaria transmission following high bed net coverage. While increasing bed net coverage beyond the current levels may not significantly reduce the transmission potential of An. arabiensis, it is anticipated that increasing or at least sustaining high bed net coverage will result in a diminished role for An. funestus in malaria transmission.

Changing malaria intervention coverage, transmission and hospitalization in Kenya Emelda A Okiro, Victor A Alegana, Abdisalan M Noor, Robert W Snow Malaria Journal 2010, 9:285 (15 October 2010) Description of the changes in malaria epidemiology in Kenya by looking at the changes in malaria admission in eight hospitals and in several explanatory variables, such as ITN coverage. This work brings additional information to the current debate over the “epidemiological transition” of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa.

Malaria paediatric hospitalization between 1999 and 2008 across Kenya Emelda A Okiro, Victor A Alegana, Abdisalan M Noor, Juliette J Mutheu, Elizabeth Juma, Robert W Snow BMC Medicine 2009, 7:75 (9 December 2009) While admission rates have declined over the last decade, the changes in pediatric hospitalizations for malaria across Kenya are not uniform, highlighting geographical inequalities and the need for further investigation to ensure interventions aimed at infection control are effective.
