Multiple host-switching of Haemosporidia parasites in bats Linda Duval, Vincent Robert, Gabor Csorba, Alexandre Hassanin, Milijaona Randrianarivelojosia, Joe Walston, Thy Nhim, Steve M Goodman, Frédéric Ariey Malaria Journal 2007, 6:157 (29 November 2007) Understanding parasites of bats has a broad significance to the study of a potential emergence of infectious disease in humans; in addition, studies of haemosporida in bats are rare and these are the first molecular data available. The geographical location of the study in Madagascar and Cambodia, two areas of considerable animal biodiversity, is also noteworthy.

Anders Enevold, Watoky MMM Nkya, Michael Theisen, Lasse S Vestergaard, Anja TR Jensen, Trine Staalsoe, Thor G Theander, Ib C Bygbjerg, Michael Alifrangis Malaria Journal 2007, 6:153 (16 November 2007) In this study the authors investigated the role and the prevalence of anti-malarial antibodies in relation to treatment failure. The findings show that the acquired immunity can enhance the clinical efficacy of drug therapy and that levels of anti-GLURP antibodies were strongly associated with treatment outcome.

Philippe Brasseur, Patrice Agnamey, Oumar Gaye, Michel Vaillant, Walter RJ Taylor, Piero L Olliaro Malaria Journal 2007, 6:150 (15 November 2007) There have been few studies looking at the long-term use of AS+AQ in Africa. The favourable results of this study support the policy decision of using this combination in Senegal. After six years of use, it is still highly effective in the Oussouye district, where the rate of in vitro chloroquine resistance is > 60%

Cerebrospinal fluid and serum biomarkers of cerebral malaria mortality in Ghanaian children Henry B Armah, Nana O Wilson, Bismark Y Sarfo, Michael D Powell, Vincent C Bond, Winston Anderson, Andrew A Adjei, Richard K Gyasi, Yao Tettey, Edwin K Wiredu, Jon Tongren, Venkatachalam Udhayakumar, Jonathan K Stiles Malaria Journal 2007, 6:147 (12 November 2007) The balance between specific cytokines and chemokines produced in response to infection is thought to play an important role in various forms of severe malaria. This study investigates the behaviour of 36 different biomarkers and identifies new clues for understanding pathophysiological events.

Abdunoor M Kabanywanyi, Alex Mwita, Deborah Sumari, Renata Mandike, Kefas Mugittu, Salim Abdulla Malaria Journal 2007, 6:146 (11 November 2007) This study provides useful data on efficacy of the two currently deployed ACTs in Africa, AQ+AS and AL. Tanzania mainland has adopted AL first line since this trial, and Zanzibar AQ+AS. The efficacy and side-effects of these drugs are important questions and, despite their widespread deployment, there is remarkable little published literature outside a few major randomized trials.

Incorporating a quiz into informed consent processes: Qualitative study of participants' reactions Sassy Molyneux, Caroline Gikonyo, Vicki Marsh, Philip Bejon Malaria Journal 2007, 6:145 (10 November 2007) Formal checks of participant understanding are widely recommended to improve informed consent processes. The quiz prompted community members to voice concerns about blood sampling and vaccine side-effects, but it also caused significant upset and concern, as some of the quiz questions appeared to fuel misconceptions and fears, with potentially negative consequences for both the study and community members.

Lena Hommerich, Christa von Oertzen, George Bedu-Addo, Ville Holmberg, Patrick A Acquah, Teunis A Eggelte, Ulrich Bienzle, Frank P Mockenhaupt Malaria Journal 2007, 6:144 (8 November 2007) In southern Ghana, placental malaria and maternal anaemia have declined substantially after the implementation of IPTp-SP. Conceivably, these effects can further be increased by improving IPTp-SP coverage and adherence. The main finding is a decrease in malariometric measures in pregnant women in 2006 compared to 2000.
