Samson M Kinyanjui, David J Conway, David E Lanar, Kevin Marsh Malaria Journal 2007, 6:82 (28 June 2007) The study indicates that antibodies against merozoite antigens have very short
half-lives and this has to be taken into account when designing serological studies or vaccines based on these antigens.

Marion Barends, Anchalee Jaidee, Nopparat Khaohirun, Pratap Singhasivanon, François Nosten Malaria Journal 2007, 6:81 (27 June 2007) Getting more potential antimalarial drugs is a priority abd this new ferroquine compound has been shown here to have high anti-malarial activity in vitro against multi-drug resistant parasites

Babacar Faye, Jean-Louis Ndiaye, Daouda Ndiaye, Yemou Dieng, Oumar Faye, Oumar Gaye Malaria Journal 2007, 6:80 (14 June 2007) Four antimalarial drug combinations, including three ACTs, were studied in five health districts in Senegal, all highly effective. Senegal has modified its approach to treatment of malaria since 2004 and has adopted artesunate plus amodiaquine as first-line therapy. Regular monitoring of this strategy is essential because therapeutic failures have been documented in the south of the country

Establishing a malaria diagnostics centre of excellence in Kisumu, Kenya Colin Ohrt, Peter Obare, Ampon Nanakorn, Christine Adhiambo, Ken Awuondo, Wendy O'Meara, Shon Remich, Kurt Martin, Earnest Cook, Jean-Paul Chretien, Carmen Lucas, Joseph Osoga, Peter McEvoy, Martin Owaga, James Odera, Bernhards Ogutu Malaria Journal 2007, 6:79 (12 June 2007) False positive and negative malaria smears are a serious problem, even with research microscopists and training can dramatically improve performance. This case study shows how quality microscopy can be provided by the Centre of Excellence concept.

Madeleine Dahlbäck, Thomas Lavstsen, Ali Salanti, Lars Hviid, David E Arnot, Thor G Theander, Morten A Nielsen Malaria Journal 2007, 6:78 (12 June 2007) The data presented here indicate that there is no promiscuous transcription of var genes: exclusive expression of a single var gene throughout the cycle, from the ring to the schizont stage, is regulated at a pre-transcriptional level

Luis Fonseca, Elsa Seixas, Geoffrey Butcher, Jean Langhorne Malaria Journal 2007, 6:77 (7 June 2007) In this paper, the immune response is compared in mice injected directly with infected red blood cells and in mice infected by the bites of infected mosquitoes. In view of the differences observed, the authors feel that detailed studies of early host responses should in future include infection by this natural route, especially when testing or comparing antigens as potential vaccine candidates.

Microbial larvicides for malaria control in The Gambia Silas Majambere, Steven W Lindsay, Clare Green, Balla Kandeh, Ulrike Fillinger Malaria Journal 2007, 6:76 (7 June 2007) Environmentally safe microbial larvicides can significantly reduce larval abundance in the natural habitats of The Gambia and could be a useful tool for inclusion in an integrated vector management programme.

An insight into immunogenic salivary proteins of Sylvie Cornelie, Franck Remoue, Souleymane Doucoure, Tofene NDiaye, Francois-Xavier Sauvage, Denis Boulanger, Francois Simondon Malaria Journal 2007, 6:75 (5 June 2007) This preliminary work supports the potential of using anti-saliva immune responses as a measure of exposure to Anopheles bites.

Devanand Moonasar, Ameena Goga, John Frean, Philip Kruger, Daniel Chandramohan Malaria Journal 2007, 6:74 (2 June 2007) Malaria rapid diagnostic tests are simple to perform and provide results quickly for making treatment decisions. However, the accuracy and application of RDT results depends on several factors, such as quality of the RDT, their storage, transport and end-user performance.

Oleksii A Skorokhod, Evelin Schwarzer, Monica Ceretto, Paolo Arese Malaria Journal 2007, 6:73 (2 June 2007) The data presented do not support the hypothesis that monocytes are mediators of anti-parasitic defence in clinical malaria via activation of iNOS and production of NO, and suggest caution in extrapolating data obtained with murine or hybrid systems to human malaria.
