Alicia Arnott, Alyssa E Barry, John C Reeder Malaria Journal 2012, 11:14 (10 January 2012) With malaria elimination back on the global agenda, mapping of global and local P. vivax population structure is essential prior to establishing goals for elimination and the roll-out of interventions.

A new world malaria map: Plasmodium falciparum endemicity in 2010 Peter W Gething, Anand P Patil, David L Smith, Carlos A Guerra, Iqbal RF Elyazar, Geoffrey L Johnston, Andrew J Tatem, Simon I Hay Malaria Journal 2011, 10:378 (20 December 2011) The paper represents a Herculean effort to provide an updated map of the global distribution of malaria, based on three key malariometric indices PfPR, PfEIR and PfRC and represents a unique contribution.

Jean Sarr, Eve Orlandi-Pradines, Sonia Fortin, Cheikh Sow, Sylvie Cornelie, François Rogerie, Soihibou Guindo, Lassana Konate, Thierry Fusaï, Gilles Riveau, Christophe Rogier, Franck Remoue Parasites & Vectors 2011, 4:212 (7 November 2011) Biomarkers of exposure to Plasmodium falciparum would be a useful tool for the assessment of malaria transmission intensity. By using a multiplex technology, our results indicated that antibodies to Glurp, Lsa1, Lsa3, and Salsa antigens represent potential surrogates of exposure to malaria in context of low transmission. Using the SaTScan method to detect local malaria clusters for guiding malaria control programmes Marlize Coleman, Michael Coleman, Aaron M Mabuza, Gerdalize Kok, Maureen Coetzee, David N Durrheim Malaria Journal 2009, 8:68 (17 April 2009) Understanding the clustering of malaria cases is important for targeting control efforts at local levels, especially in areas of low malaria transmission.

Andrew J Tatem, Carlos A Guerra, Caroline W Kabaria, Abdisalan M Noor, Simon I Hay Malaria Journal 2008, 7:218 (27 October 2008) The paper documents efforts to use a global population database, medical intelligence and urban extent maps to identify and describe spatially those areas of the malaria endemic world where human population densities are lowest and highest, resulting in modified transmission and, as such, impact upon malaria burden.

Standardizing estimates of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite rate David L Smith, Carlos A Guerra, Robert W Snow, Simon I Hay Malaria Journal 2007, 6:131 (25 September 2007) The parasite rate is a commonly reported index of malaria transmission intensity. The analysis of over 140 studies suggests that the relationship between parasite rate and age is predictable across the observed range of malaria endemicity. This new algorithm provides a reliable method for standardizing parasite rate for the purposes of comparing studies and mapping malaria endemicity
