Charles O Obonyo, Elizabeth A Juma Malaria Journal 2012, 11:2 (4 January 2012) The evidence on the efficacy of clindamycin plus quinine as an alternative treatment for uncomplicated malaria is inconclusive. Adequately powered trials are urgently required to compare this combination with artemisinin-based combinations.

Changing malaria intervention coverage, transmission and hospitalization in Kenya Emelda A Okiro, Victor A Alegana, Abdisalan M Noor, Robert W Snow Malaria Journal 2010, 9:285 (15 October 2010) Description of the changes in malaria epidemiology in Kenya by looking at the changes in malaria admission in eight hospitals and in several explanatory variables, such as ITN coverage. This work brings additional information to the current debate over the “epidemiological transition” of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa.

Bernhards R Ogutu, Rita Baiden, Diadier Diallo, Peter G Smith, Fred N Binka Malaria Journal 2010, 9:103 (20 April 2010) This paper is important because so many malaria drug and vaccine clinical trials are now occurring in low-income countries and the INDEPTH Network is a leader in the conduct, supervision, and evaluation of them.

Evidence of decline of malaria in the general hospital of Libreville, Gabon from 2000 to 2008 Marielle Bouyou-Akotet, Denise Mawili-Mboumba, Eric Kendjo, Modeste Mabika-Mamfoumbi, Edgard Ngoungou, Arnaud Dzeing-Ella, Mireille Pemba-Mihindou, Euloge Ibinga, Emmanuel Efame-Eya, Tim Planche, Peter G Kremsner, Maryvonne Kombila Malaria Journal 2009, 8:300 (17 December 2009) This paper describes a changing slide positivity rate among paediatric in-patients and out-patients presenting to a tertiary level hospital in Libreville, Gabon. This is an important data series as it is represents a long time-series of quality-assured parasitological diagnoses.

Epidemiology of malaria in the forest-savanna transitional zone of Ghana Seth Owusu-Agyei, Kwaku Asante, Martin Adjuik, George Adjei, Elizabeth Awini, Mohammed Adams, Sam Newton, David Dosoo, Dominic Dery, Akua Agyeman-Budu, John Gyapong, Brian Greenwood, Daniel Chandramohan Malaria Journal 2009, 8:220 (28 September 2009) The transmission of malaria in the forest-savannah region of central Ghana is high and perennial, which makes this an appropriate site for conducting clinical trials of anti-malarial drugs and vaccines.

Space-time variation of malaria incidence in Yunnan province, China Archie CA Clements, Adrian G Barnett, Zhang Cheng, Robert W Snow, Hom Zhou Malaria Journal 2009, 8:180 (31 July 2009) This study presents a space-time analysis of county-level malaria incidence for a large Province in China, a country that has traditionally been under-represented in the malaria epidemiology literature. A number of findings are likely to be of wide interest amongst the malaria epidemiology community, not least the simple presentation of robust maps of the contemporary spatial distribution of malaria risk.

Jubilate Bernard, George Mtove, Renata Mandike, Frank Mtei, Caroline Maxwell, Hugh Reyburn Malaria Journal 2009, 8:65 (16 April 2009) Marked inequity persists with the poorest households still experiencing the highest risk of malaria and the lowest ITN coverage. Abolition of this inequity within the foreseeable future is likely to require mass interventions.

Mac Otten, Maru Aregawi, Wilson Were, Corine Karema, Ambachew Medin, Worku Bekele, Daddi Jima, Khoti Gausi, Ryuichi Komatsu, Eline Korenromp, Daniel Low-Beer, Mark Grabowsky Malaria Journal 2009, 8:14 (14 January 2009) Initial evidence indicates that the combination of mass distribution of LLIN to all children below five years and nationwide distribution of ACT in the public sector was associated with substantial declines of in-patient malaria cases and deaths in Rwanda and Ethiopia. Clinic-based data was a useful tool for local monitoring of the impact of malaria programmes.

Declining incidence of malaria imported into the UK from West Africa Ron H Behrens, Bernadette Carroll, Valerie Smith, Neal Alexander Malaria Journal 2008, 7:235 (10 November 2008) The paper deals with a highly relevant issue of risk assessment with regards to malaria exposure. Such information is pivotal for the establishment of rational recommendations and guidelines for malaria prophylaxis in endemic areas of West Africa.

Andrew J Tatem, Carlos A Guerra, Caroline W Kabaria, Abdisalan M Noor, Simon I Hay Malaria Journal 2008, 7:218 (27 October 2008) The paper documents efforts to use a global population database, medical intelligence and urban extent maps to identify and describe spatially those areas of the malaria endemic world where human population densities are lowest and highest, resulting in modified transmission and, as such, impact upon malaria burden.

Matilda Temperley, Dirk H Mueller, J Kiambo Njagi, Willis Akhwale, Siân E Clarke, Matthew CH Jukes, Benson BA Estambale, Simon Brooker Malaria Journal 2008, 7:196 (30 September 2008) School health and nutrition programmes have an important role in improving the health and educational outcomes of children. This is the first study which examines the cost-effectiveness of a school-based malaria intervention. Given that as much as 20% of mortality in school-age children in sub-Saharan Africa is due to malaria, the findings and conclusions from this paper are of interest to those inside and outside the malaria field.
