Clindamycin plus quinine for treating uncomplicated falciparum malaria: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Charles O Obonyo, Elizabeth A Juma Malaria Journal 2012, 11:2 (4 January 2012)

The evidence on the efficacy of clindamycin plus quinine as an alternative treatment for uncomplicated malaria is inconclusive. Adequately powered trials are urgently required to compare this combination with artemisinin-based combinations.

Space-time variation of malaria incidence in Yunnan province, China

Archie CA Clements, Adrian G Barnett, Zhang Cheng, Robert W Snow, Hom Zhou Malaria Journal 2009, 8:180 (31 July 2009)

This study presents a space-time analysis of county-level malaria incidence for a large Province in China, a country that has traditionally been under-represented in the malaria epidemiology literature. A number of findings are likely to be of wide interest amongst the malaria epidemiology community, not least the simple presentation of robust maps of the contemporary spatial distribution of malaria risk.

Equity and coverage of insecticide-treated bed nets in an area of intense transmission of Plasmodium falciparum in Tanzania

Jubilate Bernard, George Mtove, Renata Mandike, Frank Mtei, Caroline Maxwell, Hugh Reyburn Malaria Journal 2009, 8:65 (16 April 2009)

Marked inequity persists with the poorest households still experiencing the highest risk of malaria and the lowest ITN coverage. Abolition of this inequity within the foreseeable future is likely to require mass interventions.

Initial evidence of reduction of malaria cases and deaths in Rwanda and Ethiopia due to rapid scale-up of malaria prevention and treatment

Mac Otten, Maru Aregawi, Wilson Were, Corine Karema, Ambachew Medin, Worku Bekele, Daddi Jima, Khoti Gausi, Ryuichi Komatsu, Eline Korenromp, Daniel Low-Beer, Mark Grabowsky Malaria Journal 2009, 8:14 (14 January 2009)

Initial evidence indicates that the combination of mass distribution of LLIN to all children below five years and nationwide distribution of ACT in the public sector was associated with substantial declines of in-patient malaria cases and deaths in Rwanda and Ethiopia. Clinic-based data was a useful tool for local monitoring of the impact of malaria programmes.

Human population, urban settlement patterns and their impact on Plasmodium falciparum malaria endemicity

Andrew J Tatem, Carlos A Guerra, Caroline W Kabaria, Abdisalan M Noor, Simon I Hay Malaria Journal 2008, 7:218 (27 October 2008)

The paper documents efforts to use a global population database, medical intelligence and urban extent maps to identify and describe spatially those areas of the malaria endemic world where human population densities are lowest and highest, resulting in modified transmission and, as such, impact upon malaria burden.

Costs and cost-effectiveness of delivering intermittent preventive treatment through schools in western Kenya

Matilda Temperley, Dirk H Mueller, J Kiambo Njagi, Willis Akhwale, Siân E Clarke, Matthew CH Jukes, Benson BA Estambale, Simon Brooker Malaria Journal 2008, 7:196 (30 September 2008)

School health and nutrition programmes have an important role in improving the health and educational outcomes of children. This is the first study which examines the cost-effectiveness of a school-based malaria intervention. Given that as much as 20% of mortality in school-age children in sub-Saharan Africa is due to malaria, the findings and conclusions from this paper are of interest to those inside and outside the malaria field.
