The poor efficacy of AS+AQ in Boende should alert the national programme to foci of resistance and emphasizes the need for systems for the prospective monitoring of treatment efficacy at sentinel sites in the country.

Robin Kobbe, Philipp Klein, Samuel Adjei, Solomon Amemasor, William Thompson, Hanna Heidemann, Maja V Nielsen, Julia Vohwinkel, Benedikt Hogan, Benno Kreuels, Martina Bührlen, Wibke Loag, Daniel Ansong, Jürgen May Malaria Journal 2008, 7:261 (19 December 2008) Numerous trials have demonstrated high efficacy and safety of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) under supervised treatment but looking how these treatments are applied unsupervised are scarce. Unobserved AL and ASAQ treatment showed high adequate clinical and parasitological responses, though AL was inferior in preventing late clinical failures.
