Validation of oral fluid samples to monitor serological changes to Plasmodium falciparum: An observational study in southern Zambia

Alexis P Chidi, Sandra Chishimba, Tamaki Kobayashi, Harry Hamapumbu, Sungano Mharakurwa, Philip E Thuma, William J Moss Malaria Journal 2011, 10:162 (10 June 2011)

Oral fluid is a valid alternative specimen for monitoring changes in antibodies to P. falciparum. The collection of crevicular fluid is often more acceptable to communities, poses less of a biohazard than blood samples and can be performed by community volunteers.

Distinction of Plasmodium falciparum recrudescence and re-infection by MSP2 genotyping: A caution about unstandardized classification criteria

Petrica Rouse, Mtawa AP Mkulama, Philip E Thuma, Sungano Mharakurwa Malaria Journal 2008, 7:185 (23 September 2008)

A brief report commenting on variability in measures of the size of amplified fragments of a variable region of the msp2 gene, that are used for “fingerprinting” analyses to assign treatment outcomes. The work offers useful information on the precision of this important methodology and on the need for standardization of methods.
