The quality of antimalarials available in Yemen

Ahmed Abdo-Rabbo, Amal Bassili, Hoda Atta Malaria Journal 2005, 4:28 (29 June 2005)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

Sub-standard drugs lead to unsatisfactory treatment: this does not only have serious consequences for the patient, but it may be misinterpreted as drug resistance. Drugs at various levels of the distribution system in Yemen were sampled and analysed in three different quality control laboratories.

Clustered local transmission and asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria infections in a recently emerged, hypoendemic Peruvian Amazon community

OraLee Branch, W Martin Casapia, Dionicia V Gamboa, Jean N Hernandez, Freddy F Alava, Norma Roncal, Eugenia Alvarez, Enrique J Perez, Eduardo Gotuzzo Malaria Journal 2005, 4:27 (23 June 2005)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

The spatial/temporal distribution of malaria in a hypoendemic situation, where malaria is very localized in a few households within the region, is an argument for a more specific targeting of control measures (for example, by insecticide-spraying at-risk houses).

Molecular analysis of two local falciparum malaria outbreaks on the French Guiana coast confirms the msp1 B-K1/varD genotype association with severe malaria

Eric Legrand, Beatrice Volney, Anne Lavergne, Caroline Tournegros, Loïc Florent, Doris Accrombessi, Micheline Guillotte, Odile Mercereau-Puijalon, Philippe Esterre Malaria Journal 2005, 4:26 (21 June 2005)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

Are some strains of parasites more virulent than others ? This question is investigated here by studying parasite genotypes in isolates from patients with different clinical forms of malaria in French Guiana, an area where parasite polymorphism is normally low.
