Malaria transmission in Libreville: results of a one year survey Jean-Romain Mourou, Thierry Coffinet, Fanny Jarjaval, Christelle Cotteaux, Eve Pradines, Lydie Godefroy, Maryvonne Kombila, Frédéric Pagès Malaria Journal 2012, 11:40 (9 February 2012) Clinical studies have shown a decline in the burden of malaria in Libreville, the capital city of Gabon, but the characteristics of transmission are poorly known. It appears that the decrease of transmission seen inperi-urban areas is probably more dependent of the socio-economic level of a quarter than of its location in the city.

Conditions of malaria transmission in Dakar from 2007 to 2010 Libasse Gadiaga, Vanessa Machault, Frédéric Pagès, Abdoulaye Gaye, Fanny Jarjaval, Lydie Godefroy, Birane Cissé, Jean-Pierre Lacaux, Cheikh Sokhna, Jean-François Trape, Christophe Rogier Malaria Journal 2011, 10:312 (21 October 2011) This study examines the determinants of malaria transmission in Dakar and is important given the emerging problem of malaria in urban environments.

Awareness, attitudes and prevention of malaria in the cities of Douala and Yaoundé (Cameroon) Cyrille Ndo, Benjamin Menze-Djantio, Christophe Antonio-Nkondjio Parasites & Vectors 2011, 4:181 (20 September 2011) Malaria remains a major public health threat in Cameroon. This study reports on the knowledge, attitudes and management of malaria cases by households living in the cities of Douala and Yaounde (Cameroon). The study also highlights major obstacles to the use of bed-nets and adequate malaria treatment by communities. Image: Anopheline breeding sites in Douala, Cameroon.

The use of schools for malaria surveillance and programme evaluation in Africa Simon Brooker, Jan H Kolaczinski, Carol W Gitonga, Abdisalan M Noor, Robert W Snow Malaria Journal 2009, 8:231 (19 October 2009) This paper reviews the historical experience and current rationale for the use of schools and school children as a complementary, inexpensive framework for planning, monitoring and evaluating malaria control in Africa.

Highly focused anopheline breeding sites and malaria transmission in Dakar Vanessa Machault, Libasse Gadiaga, Cécile Vignolles, Fanny Jarjaval, Samia Bouzid, Cheikh Sokhna, Jean-Pierre Lacaux, Jean-François Trape, Christophe Rogier, Frédéric Pagès Malaria Journal 2009, 8:138 (24 June 2009) According to the authors, it is not relevant to study malaria throughout an entire city because averages hide significant heterogeneity. It becomes necessary to work on a local scale to better assess the transmission of vector-borne diseases in the city that far from disappearing, adapt to new conditions. This point of view is particularly important as the urban population continues to increase.

History of malaria control in Tajikistan and rapid malaria appraisal in an agro-ecological setting Barbara Matthys, Tohir Sherkanov, Saifudin S Karimov, Zamonidin Khabirov, Till Mostowlansky, Jürg Utzinger, Kaspar Wyss Malaria Journal 2008, 7:217 (26 October 2008) This paper has a dual interest, firstly because it reports on a ‘rapid malaria appraisal’ approach in an endemic setting of Central Asia; secondly, because malaria information from these areas is scanty, and both past and current situations are presented here in exhaustive manner.

Malaria transmission in Dakar: A two-year survey Frederic Pagès, Gaetan Texier, Bruno Pradines, Libasse Gadiaga, Vanessa Machault, Fanny Jarjaval, Kristell Penhoat, Franck Berger, Jean-François Trape, Christophe Rogier, Cheikh Sokhna Malaria Journal 2008, 7:178 (16 September 2008) Malaria is still transmitted in downtown Dakar. One of the features of this paper is to confirm the importance of Anopheles arabiensis as the main vector today (which is different from the situation thirty years ago). It also shows the presence of An. melas.

A census-weighted, spatially-stratified household sampling strategy for urban malaria epidemiology Jose G Siri, Kim A Lindblade, Daniel H Rosen, Bernard Onyango, John M Vulule, Laurence Slutsker, Mark L Wilson Malaria Journal 2008, 7:39 (29 February 2008) This paper describes a new approach for developing sampling frames that can be used for urban environments. The model was developed to meet the needs of a KAP survey in Kisumu, Kenya. Enumeration areas were selected combined with population census data.

This pilot study addresses some of the important issues of larviciding in an urban environment.

Shr-Jie Wang, Christian Lengeler, Thomas A Smith, Penelope Vounatsou, Guéladio Cissé, Marcel Tanner Malaria Journal 2006, 5:29 (4 April 2006) This is one of a series papers reporting assessment of the malaria burden in urban settings in Africa. The same methodology of rapid assessment has been applied here in Yopougon, Ivory Coast. Malaria endemicity was found to be low, as a result of rapid urbanization.

S Patrick Kachur, Carolyn Black, Salim Abdulla, Catherine Goodman Malaria Journal 2006, 5:25 (29 March 2006) Major problems face almost all countries in transition to ACT for malaria case management. The paper reveals the fast pace at which the private sector is moving ahead of national policies. It draws attention to both the responsible behaviour of many elements of the private sector supply chain and problematic behaviour of others. Most importantly it reveals the extent to which monotherapy with artemisinin compounds is available and sounds an alarm for other urban African settings.

Ecologists can enable communities to implement malaria vector control in Africa W Mukabana, Khadija Kannady, G Michael Kiama, Jasper N Ijumba, Evan M Mathenge, Ibrahim Kiche, Gamba Nkwengulila, Leonard Mboera, Deo Mtasiwa, Yoichi Yamagata, Ingeborg van Schayk, Bart GJ Knols, Steven W Lindsay, Marcia de Castro, Hassan Mshinda, Marcel Tanner, Ulrike Fillinger, Gerry F Killeen Malaria Journal 2006, 5:9 (3 February 2006) Ecologists in African acadaemia are uniquely positioned to enable the application of practical environmental and entomological skills for malaria control by communities at grass roots level and should be supported to fulfil this neglected role.
