This paper describes the frequency of occurence of larval habitats of An. gambiae and An. funestus in relation to “hilltops” versus stream areas.

Comparative evaluation of the Ifakara tent trap-B, the standardized resting boxes and the human landing catch for sampling malaria vectors and other mosquitoes in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Maggy Sikulu, Nicodem J Govella, Sheila B Ogoma, John Mpangile, Said H Kambi, Khadija Kannady, Prosper C Chaki, Wolfgang R Mukabana, Gerry F Killeen Malaria Journal 2009, 8:197 (12 August 2009)

The paper addresses the major need of determining the best sampling methods for malaria vector mosquitoes in the urban environment, where densities of major vector species are usually low. The paper is well-designed and provides a useful comparison of the effectiveness of the different traps.

Highly focused anopheline breeding sites and malaria transmission in Dakar

Vanessa Machault, Libasse Gadiaga, Cécile Vignolles, Fanny Jarjaval, Samia Bouzid, Cheikh Sokhna, Jean-Pierre Lacaux, Jean-François Trape, Christophe Rogier, Frédéric Pagès Malaria Journal 2009, 8:138 (24 June 2009)

According to the authors, it is not relevant to study malaria throughout an entire city because averages hide significant heterogeneity. It becomes necessary to work on a local scale to better assess the transmission of vector-borne diseases in the city that far from disappearing, adapt to new conditions. This point of view is particularly important as the urban population continues to increase.

History of malaria control in Tajikistan and rapid malaria appraisal in an agro-ecological setting

Barbara Matthys, Tohir Sherkanov, Saifudin S Karimov, Zamonidin Khabirov, Till Mostowlansky, Jürg Utzinger, Kaspar Wyss Malaria Journal 2008, 7:217 (26 October 2008)

This paper has a dual interest, firstly because it reports on a ‘rapid malaria appraisal’ approach in an endemic setting of Central Asia; secondly, because malaria information from these areas is scanty, and both past and current situations are presented here in exhaustive manner.

A tool box for operational mosquito larval control: preliminary results and early lessons from the Urban Malaria Control Programme in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Ulrike Fillinger, Khadija Kannady, George William, Michael J Vanek, Stefan Dongus, Dickson Nyika, Yvonne Geissbühler, Prosper P Chaki, Nico J Govella, Evan M Mathenge, Burton H Singer, Hassan Mshinda, Steven W Lindsay, Marcel Tanner, Deo Mtasiwa, Marcia C de Castro, Gerry F Killeen Malaria Journal 2008, 7:20 (25 January 2008)

A programme which delegates responsibility for routine mosquito control and surveillance to modestly-paid community members. This pilot study addresses some of the important issues of larviciding in an urban environment.

Interdependence of domestic malaria prevention measures and mosquito-human interactions in urban Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Yvonne Geissbühler, Prosper Chaki, Basiliana Emidi, Nicodemus J Govella, Rudolf Shirima, Valeliana Mayagaya, Deo Mtasiwa, Hassan Mshinda, Ulrike Fillinger, Steven W Lindsay, Khadija Kannady, Marcia de Castro, Marcel Tanner, Gerry F Killeen Malaria Journal 2007, 6:126 (19 September 2007)

In a situation of changing mosquito and human behaviour, ITNs may confer lower levels of personal protection which need to be supplemented by measures of environmental management in the community, including mosquito-proofing of houses and larviciding.

Rapid Urban Malaria Appraisal (RUMA) IV: Epidemiology of urban malaria in Cotonou (Benin)

Shr-Jie Wang, Christian Lengeler, Thomas A Smith, Penelope Vounatsou, Martin Akogbeto, Marcel Tanner Malaria Journal 2006, 5:45 (2 June 2006)

This is one of a series papers reporting assessment of the malaria burden in urban settings in Africa. The same methodology of rapid assessment has been applied here in Yopougon, Ivory Coast. Malaria endemicity was found to be low, as a result of rapid urbanization.

Rapid Urban Malaria Appraisal (RUMA) II: Epidemiology of urban malaria in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania)

Shr-Jie Wang, Christian Lengeler, Deodatus Mtasiwa, Thomas Mshana, Lusinge Manane, Godson Maro, Marcel Tanner Malaria Journal 2006, 5:28 (4 April 2006)

This is one of a series papers reporting assessment of the malaria burden in urban settings in Africa. The same methodology of rapid assessment has been applied to different African capital cities, here in Dar-es-Salaam. The study shows that the number of clinical malaria cases was much lower than expected, based on existing reporting data. This suggests that improved malaria diagnosis and re-defined clinical guidelines are urgently required to avoid over-treatment with antimalarials.

Ecologists in African acadaemia are uniquely positioned to enable the application of practical environmental and entomological skills for malaria control by communities at grass roots level and should be supported to fulfil this neglected role.

Rapid urban malaria appraisal (RUMA) in sub-Saharan Africa

Shr-Jie Wang, Christian Lengeler, Thomas A Smith, Penelope Vounatsou, Guéladio Cissé, Diadie A Diallo, Martin Akogbeto, Deo Mtasiwa, Awash Teklehaimanot, Marcel Tanner Malaria Journal 2005, 4:40 (9 September 2005)

To assess the burden of malaria in a defined environment with the minimum of time/energy/money and the maximum of relevance/accuracy/precision/comprehension is an old dream. Generations of malariologists were faced to this challenge and proposed number of responses. This paper focuses on urban areas of sub-Saharan Africa and introduces an assessment method tested in four African towns.
