Evaluation of Olyset™ insecticide-treated nets distributed seven years previously in Tanzania Adriana Tami, Godfrey Mubyazi, Alison Talbert, Hassan Mshinda, Stéphane Duchon, Christian Lengeler Malaria Journal 2004, 3:19 (29 June 2004) Olyset nets and PermaNets are the only two long-lasting insecticidal nets currently available. This retrospective study shows that Olyset nets are popular, durable and with a much longer insecticide persistence than ordinary polyester nets. ITN programmes in rural malaria-endemic areas have shown that the re-treatment of nets faces numerous logistic problems and that a switch to long-lasting insecticidal nets represents, therefore, a very attractive option.

J Bousema, Louis C Gouagna, Chris J Drakeley, Annemiek M Meutstege, Bernard A Okech, Ikupa NJ Akim, John C Beier, John I Githure, Robert W Sauerwein Malaria Journal 2004, 3:18 (17 June 2004) The fate of gametocytes in healthy children was. before this paper, essentially unknown. This is particularly relevant as the majority of infected individuals in an endemic area are asymptomatic and the duration of gametocytaemia in these carriers may influence transmission efficiency.

Judith A Omumbo, Simon I Hay, Carlos A Guerra, Robert W Snow Malaria Journal 2004, 3:17 (17 June 2004) This paper sets out to demonstrate the validity of the MARA malaria risk map, as a suitable estimate of malaria endemicity in Kenya. This work is important because this risk map is used more and more to estimate the burden of malaria disease in Africa.

Jan H Kolaczinski, Nasir Muhammad, Qaiser S Khan, Zahoor Jan, Naveeda Rehman, Toby J Leslie, Mark Rowland Malaria Journal 2004, 3:15 (10 June 2004) As ITNs are increasingly used in the context of complex emergencies, this well-documented case study of what happens in refugee camps in Afghanistan describes some of the major issues and problems related to ITN distribution.

Ole Wichmann, Marion Muehlen, Holger Gruss, Frank P Mockenhaupt, Norbert Suttorp, Tomas Jelinek Malaria Journal 2004, 3:14 (8 June 2004) A case of Malarone-resistant P. falciparum has been identified, where the cytochrome b
codon 268 mutation was absent, indicating that there may be at least one further mechanism of Malarone resistance.

Statics and dynamics of malaria infection in Anopheles mosquitoes David L Smith, F Ellis McKenzie Malaria Journal 2004, 3:13 (4 June 2004) This theoretical and mathematical review provides a new look at the Ross-Macdonald models, the basis of malaria epidemiology. The models describe the processes that drive malaria transmission, mainly from an entomological perspective, and they are, therefore, particularly useful to evaluate intervention programmes that reduce transmission.
