Co-ordinated stage-dependent enhancement of Plasmodium falciparum antioxidant enzymes and heat shock protein expression in parasites growing in oxidatively stressed or G6PD-deficient red blood cells

Oscar Akide-Ndunge, Elisa Tambini, Giuliana Giribaldi, Paul J McMillan, Sylke Müller, Paolo Arese, Francesco Turrini Malaria Journal 2009, 8:113 (29 May 2009)

A study of the expression of antioxidant enzymes and heat shock proteins of infected red blood cells under normal and oxidative conditions. Exogenous oxidative stress or cultivation of parasites in G6PD-deficient RBCs resulted in enhanced transcription and expression of all genes tested. The outstanding finding of this investigation is that the expression of Hsps was redox-responsive.

Quantitative protein expression profiling reveals extensive post-transcriptional regulation and post-translational modifications in schizont-stage malaria parasites

Bernardo J Foth, Neng Zhang, Sachel Mok, Peter R Preiser, Zbynek Bozdech Genome Biology 2008, 9:R177 (17 December 2008)

A quantitative time-course analysis of protein abundance for Plasmodium falciparum schizonts using two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis reveals significant post-transcriptional regulation.

Data mining of the transcriptome of Plasmodium falciparum: the pentose phosphate pathway and ancillary processes

Zbynek Bozdech, Hagai Ginsburg Malaria Journal 2005, 4:17 (18 March 2005)

In order to be useful, the huge amount of transcriptomic data now available for malarial parasites needs to be linked to already available biochemical and functional data. This was done here for the pentose phosphate pathway of carbohydrate metabolism.
