Molecular monitoring of the Leu-164 mutation of dihydrofolate reductase in a highly sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine-resistant area in Africa

Edwin Ochong, Alexis Nzila, Serah Kimani, Gilbert Kokwaro, Theonest Mutabingwa, William Watkins, Kevin Marsh Malaria Journal 2003, 2:46 (15 December 2003)

This study confirms that mutation Leu-164 is not currently found in this recent sample of viable Tanzanian parasites: this finding is important, especially with the introduction of LapDap which will increase the selective advantage of the Leu-164 mutation. Continuous monitoring will be required in Africa.
